Dominican Salons

Monday, January 19, 2009

Hi Ladies,

I will be starting school again soon...I know I'm going to have a lot on my plate. Some times I get a little lazy or overwhelmed with my hair. It takes me so long to do my hair (a full day). I'm contemplating maybe going to Dominican salons the most once a month to get my hair done. I use to go there a few times in the past for wash and sets. I know their process fairly well. However, I found this article about Dominican salons for ladies that don't know too much about them. I live in Brooklyn, NY so they are everywhere. I usually pay about $20-$25 for everything. I don't know I'm thinking about it......

Smooth operators
Patrons flock to Dominican salons to straighten tight curls
By Samantha Thompson Smith - Staff Writer (The News & Observer)

Miguelina Soriano, a hair stylist at Pro-Hair Dominican Salon in Raleigh. Many people like the blowout because it doesn't use harsh chemicals. Hammond has the blowout done every month."

When you think of the best in the hair business, you think Frederic Fekkai or Sally Hershberger.
But when it comes to straight-as-a-board, silky-soft hair, more women with unruly hair -- from African-Americans to Caucasians -- are finding that few tame it better than a Dominican stylist.
"We know hair," says Haydee Suarez, who works at her mother Ana Suarez's salon, Sunny's, in Raleigh's Mini City. "We know all different types of hair."

Curly hair, frizzy hair, coarse or kinky hair. Dominicans say they can straighten it all. Just give them a good conditioner, a set of rollers, a blow dryer and a round brush. The end result is what's called a Dominican blowout, a process that can sometimes take up to two hours but turns the unmanageable into smooth Michelle Obama-like results.
In Manhattan, north of 96th Street, you'll find a salon specializing in the service on every corner, says Nina Ramirez, who started the Web site http://www.dominicanblowout.com/ in late summer to teach others how to do a blowout at home.
And it's not just Dominicans in the salons, either, she says. "It's blacks, it's Asians. It's everybody."

In the Triangle, Dominican stylists are harder to come by. But thanks to the influx of people from New York and Miami who are regulars of the Dominican blowout, there are more stylists than there used to be, especially as word gets out about the service.
That's how Sunny's came to be known as one of the go-to Dominican salons in the area. In 2005, Ana Suarez got a call from a friend living in Raleigh who told her that black women in the area might like a little of the Dominican touch.
Suarez, who had been doing blowouts in New Jersey, decided to take a chance on the area. She moved down with her family and bought Sunny's Salon, a salon which, at that point, catered mostly to white customers.

Word of mouth got out about their Dominican magic, taming the curliest of locks with the help of Italian conditioners.
Today, the blowout is the salon's most asked-for service, Haydee Suarez says. Most of the customers are African-Americans.
At most salons, including Sunny's, blowouts start at around $35 and go up depending on the hair type. Customers often have to pay more if they have thicker, coarser hair or the hair has been chemically processed.

A big part of the blowout's appeal is that no harsh chemicals are used to straighten the hair. It's an all-natural process that many consider to be healthier than other straightening methods.
"You are not getting as much damage to the hair," Ramirez says.
Today, business is so good at Sunny's that the Suarezes recently bought another North Raleigh salon near Old Wake Forest and Spring Forest roads. "More people are hearing about it," Haydee Suarez says. "We don't use grease. We don't use oil. We use silk."
What's the difference?

What makes the Dominican stylist so good?
Part of the reason is culture in the Dominican Republic. Women there are known to pay special attention to their hair, especially since one sign of beauty in the culture is straight hair.
But that's often no easy task. With their blended island heritage, which often includes African blood, they sometimes have difficult hair to straighten. Also, the island's humid, tropical climatecan often make hair fuller, curlier and harder to flatten.
Miguelina Soriano, a Dominican who owns Pro-Hair Salon off New Bern Avenue in Raleigh, has been at it for 31 years.

One afternoon last week, it took her less than an hour to wash and straighten Christin Hammond's long, naturally curly hair.

"That's why I love it," says Hammond, 26, who typically comes in once a month for a blowout. "I'm in and out in an hour."Ana Encarnacion, the owner of Dominican Hair Salon in Durham, has been working in a salon since she was 11 years old. She started by helping her mother in her salon in the Dominican Republic. Five years later, she realized she had a knack for hair styling, so she used her skills to pay her way through law school.

When she moved to the United States seven years ago, she wasn't able to use her law degree, but her styling skills were in high demand.
Her business has grown mostly through word of mouth, she says.
"We're an international boutique," she says. "We get all types, African hair, white hair. I don't mind who comes to my salon. I just prepare hair."
How to do it

The key to a successful blowout is heat, a round brush, and strong wrists and hands to pull the hair tight. Sounds a lot like what happens during a blowout in a traditionally white salon, right?
The process is similar: Pull the hair with a brush, apply heat. Repeat. But Dominicans sometimes take a few extra steps.

First, the hair is washed. Sometimes, depending on the hair type, customers are put under a hood dryer to let a conditioner soften the hair, and then the conditioner is rinsed out. Again, depending on the hair texture and if the hair has been chemically straightened, the hair is often set in rollers, dried completely under a drier and then straightened with round brush and hair dryer.

Others, however, go right from the rinse to the dryer and brush. The rollers are a good option for hair that has been chemically treated because it reduces the amount of heat the hair is exposed to, helping to keep the hair healthy and shiny, Suarez says. Most people can get at least a week out of their blowout. If it's wrapped at night with a scarf, some get up to two weeks, assuming, of course, the hair doesn't get wet. Others say they can get even longer if they sleep with a satin pillow case.

"You get bouncy, silky hair with a lot of body," Encarnacion says.
You also get no-fuss hair for at least week, part of what keeps Hammond coming back. "It's silky and smooth," Hammond says. "And I have to do nothing to it."

Hair Guide The Way!!

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Ladies... we need to listen to our hair and its needs. We need to let our hair be our guide to discovering great products and techniques that work for us. Often we are tempted to try out tons of products, lotions, potions etc that our favorite hair guru uses. Sometimes we are too eager to use a certain product because it works wonders for them. However, everything is not for everyone. What works for one persons hair may not work for the next.

If you know your hair does not do to well with protein, stick to moisture and use a little protein and vice verse. Or if you know your hair needs to be comb through gently daily to get out the kinks, and tangles stick to that. We must let our hair be our guide to having healthy hair. Some women conditioner wash just about every day, I can't do that. It will be way too much manipulation for my hair.

The hardest part is finding out what works for our hair. However once you discover it, stick with it and stay consistent. Im not sayiing we can't try different products and methods. However, just keep in mind your hair texture and how it reacts to certain products. I have tried many many products on my hair journey some I fell in loved with others I've regreted. Just don't be too quick to jump on a bandwagon.

With that being said here are some products and methods that did not work for me!!!!

Products
MTG: Way too stinky (smelt like stale bacon), weighted my hair down. I just couldn't deal with it.
Lusters Pink Oil Moisturizer: Was too heavy, made my hair look dull.
911 Leave In Moisturizer: It did nothing for me.
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle: It did not give me no slip, my hair was not as soft as I would like.
Vitapointe Hair Dress Creme: My hair felt so greasy and weight down even though I used a little.

Methods
Conditioner Washes Everyday: It was too much manipulation, my hair started shedding a lot.
Not Combing Everyday Until Washes: Towards the end of the week my hair would be so tangle, and much more difficult to DE tangle in the shower.
Drying In The Ponytail Method: It just didn't work for me, my hair did not come out as smooth and silky as with roller sets.
Wet Wrapping: Oh Lord, big mistake.
Blowdrying than Flat Ironing: Let's just say breakage, damage city... way too much heat for my hair.

Hello Ladies,

I'm sure many of you have heard the many raves and great benefits of Aloe Vera juice, Rosewater, and Glycerin mixed together. I've been wanting to try this mixture for a while now but never got around to doing it. So I decided to just order some of the items online. I already had glycerin in my stash. So I just ordered the Aloe Vera Juice and Rosewater. I also ordered some coconut oil, and cocoa butter with jojoba oil for my skin.I wanted to see how my hair will respond to this type of mixture and if it will work for me.

I heard tons and tons of reviews about this mixture and its ability to keep your hair so moisturized. So I just received my order today. I ordered from http://www.vitalpal.com/ however I actually don't recommended you order there. They took way too long to process my order and they have terrible customer service. I advise do a google search or to check around your neighborhood to find the products.

Everything is 100% natural.

Winter Dry Skin

Monday, January 5, 2009

Hello Ladies,
Every one knows that I'm obsessed with having and maintaining healthy beautiful hair. However, I'm also obsessed with having great soft skin. Over here in New York there are some really cold days and my skin tends to get dry unless I use certain products. One product that I love is the sugar scrub from Bath and Body Works.

This is one of my favorite winter scrubs to combat dry skin. Every time I use this scrub my skin feels soft, silky, moisturized, and scented with the fragrance. The sugar scrub is coarse enough to exfoliate the skin, but gentle enough to where it wont scratch or irritate your skin. I love to use it on my knees, elbows, and butt lol..My favorite scents is the Lavender \Vanilla and the Jasmine \Vanilla. It's $16.00 for a 13 oz container. It's really worth it. It lasts a very long time.

My Fav Protein Conditioner/Product Spotlight

Sunday, January 4, 2009

Ladies, I have to say that this conditioner is becoming my favorite mild protein conditioner. This conditioner is the business! Every time I use this conditioner my hair comes out so soft and easy to manage. As soon as I apply this conditioner to freshly shampooed hair instantly my hair becomes sooo soft. I apply this from the roots to the ends of my hair. Then I go under the dryer with a plastic cap for 30 minutes. Then wash it out.

It's easy to comb thru my hair in the shower with this conditioner on. It leaves my hair soft, strong, tangle free and manageable. This conditioner is like a moisturizing and mild protein conditioner in one. It's excellent for aiding in relaxer stretching, because it actually makes your new growth more easier to deal with. I actually prefer this conditioner over the famous Aphogee 2 minute re constructor.

Ohh yeah, it also smells yummy...like oranges

Hair Goals for 2009

Friday, January 2, 2009

Main Goal: Thicker, Stronger Hair

I am on a serious no joke quest for thicker hair. I just don't want long hair, I want healthy thick hair. My main concern this year is to achieve the thickness I want. Months and Months back I had some breakage in the back of my hair due to switching relaxers, and a beautician. My hair broke so bad close to the roots. Since then it has grown out a lot, however it has not caught up yet to the rest of the length. My goal is to have all the hair catch up to the same length.

Ways To Achieve Goals:

  • Pre-poo a few times a month before washes.
  • Deep Condition, alternating weekly between mild protein conditioners, and moisturizing conditioners.
  • Co-Wash 2x a week.
  • Stretch relaxers as long as possible, 8-12 weeks.
  • Frequent trimming, to even out the length, and rid any split ends.
  • More protective hair styles, especially since it's very cold here in New York.
  • Moisturize ends nightly and seal with oil.
  • Try more natural hair products or remedies.
  • Find the perfect products that works for MY hair(I have some staples)

Ladies I know we have that closet or cabinet with tons and tons of products that we don't use. Products that don't do s*** for our hair type. I want to clean out my hair bin, and get rid of a lot of products that I don't use. It just takes up a lot of space.

Hairstyle / Length

Thursday, January 1, 2009

Hey Ladies,
I hoped everyone had a great New Year's night. I just wanted to show you guys the way I wore my hair, nothing really special. This is a twist out I did, almost the same as a braid out but a little different. This style is very easy to maintain, just twist and pin at night and that's it. My roller set wrap got a little frizzy from the snow so I had to do a new hairstyle. I sprayed my hair with Aphogee pro- vitamin Leave in, moisturized my hair with Neutrogena silk touch leave-in, and sealed with oil than did twists.
